Food justice and sovereignity in the Americas
Inequalities, food and agriculture
This book takes up the discussions held in the framework of the International Congress on "Food Justice and Sovereignty in the Americas. Inequalities, food, and agriculture", held in Mexico City from October 28 to 31, 2019. This congress was a space for reflection and debate on the social, cultural, and territorial problems related to modern agri-food systems, focusing on three perspectives: - The trans-American perspective, considering diverse realities throughout the continent, both in experiences and in theoretical readings. - the systemic perspective, articulating the study of agriculture with the study of food. In other words, the reflections and debates cover the problem of agri-food, from the field to the garbage, passing through the table, the kitchen, the restaurant, or the market. - the transdisciplinary perspective, with an enriching dialogue between social sciences, civil society, and art.
The organization of this congress was the result of an inter-institutional collaboration that included: the Center for Mexican and Central American Studies (Embassy of France in Mexico), the Urban School of Lyon (University of Lyon, France), the University Program of Studies on the City and the University Coordination for Sustainability (National Autonomous University of Mexico), and the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
The texts of this book are based on the discussions held in the master conferences, working groups, and transversal tables held during the congress, where the problems faced by the food system and its territorial references were discussed from different perspectives due to their theoretical positions and their territorial references. These processes can improve access to agriculture and food.
This publication is not precisely conformed to memories of the JySALA Congress but instead seeks to go further in collective reflection and in the presentation of perspectives on the challenges of justice and food sovereignty in our region, in contexts marked by growing inequalities. Therefore, the proposal focuses on summary texts of the discussions and analysis and definition of central axes to continue advancing on highly topical issues.
Finally, the work is punctuated by photographs that were part of the exhibition ¡Provecho! Geographies of Exploitation and Struggle in the Agrifood Chain, presented at the Museum of World Cultures in parallel to the JySALA Congress. They allow us to nurture this dissemination effort to a broad public, not always academic, with a sensitive look at the inequalities and the different forms of exploitation that run through the entire agri-food chain.
