Green Seal of Jalisco’s Southern Biological Corridor
The Green Seal of Jalisco’s Southern Biological Corridor
recognizes good management practices in
traditional agave distillate production carried
out in agroforestry systems where agaves
intercropped with woody plants or with corn.
These biodiversity-friendly practices draw on
extensive traditional ecological knowledge and
highlight the vital role of peasant agriculture
in conserving, restoring, and managing the
biocultural landscape – an environment
increasingly threatened by land-use change and
agro-industrial expansion. Integrating production
systems into biodiversity conservation strategies
offers a model of socio-ecological system
governance, based on the implementation of
ecological and productive restoration processes.
While the primary beneficiaries of this project are
local communities and producer groups, one of
its key virtues lies in its potential to be replicated
and scaled up in broader restoration initiatives.
